Compared to 10 years ago, consumers are spending more these days to renovate their new homes, and some are paying large deposits upfront to their renovation contractors. This is certainly a cause for concern. When consumers pay a large deposit upfront and subsequently run into disputes due to multiple delays, or encounter renovation contractors that become insolvent, it can be challenging for them to seek recourse. What can consumers do then? Since 2004, Consumers Association of Singapore - CASE has been engaging renovation contractors to obtain the CaseTrust accreditation. This afternoon, I visited Eight Design - TOP Residential & Commercial IDs, a local renovation contractor, to better understand how COVID-19 has impacted their business and what they are doing to give consumers assurance in these challenging times.
